Personal Learning Blog

With E Portfolios starting to come on line and the need for students to become reflective learners a Personal Learning Blog is a great idea. Somewhere where students can reflect on their learning, what is going right and what could be going better.

Teachers can become an active part of these learning blogs by leaving comments and advice. How I have used them is as part of an ongoing assessment of how students are learning. I encourage my students to leave open but constructive comments about particular activities, topics or lesson objectives. I found this a little bit nervy to start with but it has been a valuable tool to help assess my performance and comments have been useful, informative, sometimes motivational but almost always maturely put together by the students.

This exercise has been a good way of using technology for personal assessment as well as receiving feedback on how I am doing. I found students were much more open using a blog than they would be in class. Students could decide to only allow themselves and me to view their blogs if this was more comfortable for them. I recommended that their parents should also be able to view which I found some parents very eager to use and comment also!

Creative writing

Why not let your students create a character and let them write a diary about their life. The character could be present, future or past.

This opens up so many opportunites for History students to create a blog for ficticious World War One soldier where they can write down what the soldiers experiences may have been like, what he would have been feeling by writing this information in the form of a diary using a blog.

English students can create a character and write a blog that includes a profile and diary entries for them. Want to include Drama element get the students to create a video or some audio and stick that on the blog to.

Been on a school trip get the class to add their experiences of the trip to a trip or class blog. This allows students some reflection about an experience and a record of what students felt. You could even make it complete and use photos of the day.

The possibilities are endless. For many students the idea that anybody in the world can look at their blog motivates them. It can also be a good way to promote individual students work by having links from the school website.

Blog Review

In your lesson why not get the students to write a review of a blog. This could be good for English where students find a blog and critically review it.

Other subjects could also review blogs on specific content for example:

Politic students could review blogs and assess their viewpoints.
Business students could assess blogs of businesses to assess their effectiveness as part of their promotional efforts.
Geography students could look at blogs about environmental change.
Media students could review blogs and their content and assess them as ways of communicating against traditional routes such as newspapers, television and radio.
